An absorbing source of pre-Adam Smith perceptions
Deftly compiled and edited for contemporary readers by Henry C. Clark, Commerce, Culture, & Liberty: Readings On Capitalism Before Adam Smith is an amalgamation of significant writings published before Adam Smith's "Wealth of Nations" (1776) impacted the world's perceptions on economics. A wide variety of authors ranging from Voltaire, to Ferdinando Galiani, to Jean-Jacques Rousseau, contribute to this absorbing source of pre-Adam Smith perceptions and judgements about economic matters prior to the birth of the American nation as a capitalist beacon to the nations of the world.

The Competition Paradigm: America's Romance With Conflict, Contest, and Commerce
Published in Paperback by Rowman & Littlefield (June, 2003)
Authors: Pauline Vaillancourt Rosenau and Pauline Vaillancourt Rosenau

Competition Paradigm Challenged
On the news just last night, a U. S. Congressman stated that competition among health care providers would insure better and cheaper health care for senior citizens. In our country, competition has been championed as the "cure" for a growing variety of problems. It is touted with such unquestioned conviction that we ordinary citizens assume it must have a solid foundation in some irrefutable Law of Economics. Recently, however, it has become increasingly apparent that this "survival of the fittest" approach is not conducive to effective schools, compassionate health care, or even efficient energy policy. Dr. Roseneau dares to challenge America's "romance" with competition using --- the facts! She even disputes whether it is accurate to attribute America's successes singularly to competition when other attributes of American workers may play larger roles. Even better, she sites evidence that groups working cooperatively can actually be more productive than groups embracing the competition paradigm! With a barrage of data, she sites research exposing the negative side to competition, being careful to differentiate some competition as more "destructive" than others. Beginning with the obvious effects of stress on individuals, she expands her analysis to include the negative effects on quality, morale, and safety within organizations, the community and, ultimately, the global village. The last two chapters deal with the problem of reversing the competition paradigm, and Dr. Roseneau acknowledges that this presents an enormous challenge without any simplistic solution. In my view, this objective, dispassionate analysis of the competition paradigm is an excellent first step toward reeducating the public. Although every page is packed with supportive data, the book is written in a style that is amazingly easy to read, even for the non-academic. The more you read, the more you sense the pure, clear sound of "common sense"!

The Complete English Tradesman
Published in Paperback by Sutton Publishing (February, 1989)
Author: Daniel Defoe
Average review score:

Timeless guide to business practicalities
Defoe wrote this in the late 1700s, and it was revised in the early 1800s, with comical footnotes about how those antiquated business practices had now been modernized! Defoe was involved in various mercantile ventures, and wrote from hard earned experience, providing a bona fide textbook of business strategy and negotiating practices that is still very cogent today. I'd highly recommend this book to young people entering the business world, but alas it's out of print, and thus impractical to obtain.

The Computer and Internet Fraud Manual
Published in Ring-bound by Obsidian (July, 2002)
Author: Joseph T. Wells
Average review score:

Covers fundamentals and professional standards
This short (171-page) book is published by the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners and provides an approach to identifying and preventing computer fraud that is consistent with that organization's body of knowledge and practices.

Part I, "Understanding and Identifying Computer Fraud" consists of none chapters that begin with a discussion of the legal issues and factors associated with computer fraud, technical fundamentals that include common threats (intrusions, viruses, fraud schemes and hacking), and specific topics about internet and e-commerce fraud.

Part II covers detecting and preventing computer fraud, with excellent material on how to properly handle evidence and work with law enforcement professionals during the response phase. This section also contains a brief treatment of applications and systems security, and detailed chapters on security auditing and implementing policies.

While this book is not especially comprehensive, it does cover the major topics that need to be taken into consideration if you're involved in corporate fraud management, but are not familiar with the technical basics of computer and internet fraud. It is also an excellent resource for the IT security professional who may be knowledgable of IT security practices, but not well versed in fraud detection and prevention.

The Confusions of Pleasure: Commerce and Culture in Ming China
Published in Hardcover by University of California Press (May, 1998)
Author: Timothy Brook
Average review score:

An internal view of an understudied dynasty
The Ming dynasty in China does not receive much attention since it mostly lacks the bloodshed or philosophical grandeur of the Qing, the Tang or the Han. Brook is one of the leading authorities on this era, and this book is, I believe, his most accessible. Beginning with documents written late in the dynasty, Brook shows how the elite of that time feared the collapse of the imagined golden past into what was then considered an immorally secular present. The massive economic changes in the globe in this era (14th to 17th centuries) changed the Chinese society and the Confucian elites place in it. Obviously less exciting to laymen than his work on Tiananmen, 1989, this is a clear book for students who have a general grasp of Chinese history and want to begin to grab details without losing the easy flow found in well written introductory books.

Countertrade
Published in Paperback by Euromoney Publications (February, 1991)
Author: Michael Rowe
Average review score:

Excellent resource for companies involved in countertrade.
This book is primarily for companies that have large quantities of products to trade with hard- currency-short foreign countries. It covers all of the important activities of countertrade: offset, buyback, counter-purchase and insurance. It also covers agreements and has very useful case studies. It is an especially timely resource - considering the difficulties being experienced by the former centrally-planned economies of the USSR and other third-world countries. We are recommending it to our consulting clients. John R. Jagoe, Director, Export Institute
